Events & Fundraising

Literacy Volunteers host events throughout the year that are both fun for the public and support literacy in Tift County.

Literacy Volunteers of Tifton-Tift County is once again participating in #GivingTuesday through the GiveGab.com website. Last year, Literacy Volunteers received $500 in inkind website design services and other prizes and donations by participating.

Anyone may view the local Literacy campaign, including a touching story by one of our newest volunteers, Julia Kersey, about how Literacy Volunteers helped her husband and why she now volunteers for the organization. Entering its fifth year, # GivingTuesday is a global day of giving observed on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving. According to the GivingTuesday Facebook page: "We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals. Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back."

On Tuesday, November 29, 2016, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.

It’s a simple idea. Just find a way for your family, your community, your company or your organization to come together to give something more. Then use the #GivingTuesday hashtage to tell everyone you can about how you are giving. Join us and be a part of a global celebration of a new tradition of generosity.

Orders are being taken now, and the holiday meats may be picked up from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, in the parking lot of Peace Lutheran Church, 604 Tennessee Dr., near Virginia Avenue, during the annual Cookie Walk.

The fundraiser benefits adults in our community who are learning to read and preparing to take their GEDs, as well as those who are learning to speak, read and write English as a second language. Call (229) 391-2527 to reserve your butt or turkey today, smoked by Towson Meats.

“Support from friends and local businesses keep us going strong,” said Bonnie Sayles, executive director of Literacy Volunteers. “Donations enable us to purchase books and recruit and train tutors, and pay fees for students to take their GEDs when they are ready.”
